Introduction

The Healthy Nail Salon Coalition (HNSC), initially named the Healthy Nail Salon Network, is a collection of nail technicians, salon owners, non-profit and government agencies, and researchers looking to improve the health and safety of nail salons. The Coalition has followed the lead of the California Healthy Nail Salon Collaborative and the New York Healthy Nail Salon Coalition; and, continue to learn from their work.

History

The Healthy Nail Salon Coalition was established in 2015 as a need resulting from the initial work within the sector. While staff at PQWCHC began identifying patients who worked in discount nail salons presenting with particular health problems, work was simultaneously underway at the Centre for Research Expertise in Occupational Disease and Occupational Cancer Research Centre identifying skin conditions amongst nail salon workers, and at York University, where toxic exposures and vulnerable workers was an area of research interest. Various sources of project-based funding allowed for these groups to merge with their common interest.

The Healthy Nail Salon Coalition has continued coordinating collective activities throughout the years. The individuals and organizations involved continue working together to improve the working conditions of people in the discount nail sector.
